Grape Seed Extract Improves Cardiovascular Health
Oral Health Benefits also Demonstrated
Grape seed extract is a
naturally occurring substance that belongs to the group of phytochemicals known
as proanthocyanidins (PAC's), which are powerful antioxidants. They promote
healthy circulation and protect cells from free radical damage caused by the
oxidation process. Used to prevent and treat high blood pressure and high
cholesterol by inhibiting the build-up of arterial plaque [atherosclerosis],
grape seed extract is believed to play a role in the stabilization of collagen
and maintenance of elastin - two significant proteins in connective tissue that
support blood vessels, muscle and organs. Grape seed extract is also
anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory.
Since PAC's are believed
to block the deterioration of blood vessels, grape seed extract has been used
to treat a condition known as chronic venous insufficiency, which occurs when
valves in the veins that carry blood back to the heart are weak or damaged.
Early research indicates
that grape seed extract appears to be moderately effective in preventing tooth
decay. It is believed that this is accomplished by inhibiting the growth of
certain oral bacteria that have a role in causing dental caries [cavities], and
it may also delay or stop the breakdown of sugars in the mouth.
It has long been
established that smokers don't respond well to gum treatment or implant
therapy. A study that was done on smokers at the University of Buffalo School
of Dental Medicine concluded that those subjects who received a supplement of
Vitamins C and E and grape seed extract had an improved response to treatment,
demonstrated by better gum attachment and improved oral health in general.
Precautions
Pregnant and
breast-feeding women should not use grape seed extract. It may also increase
the time blood needs to clot and should not be taken by individuals on
anti-platelet or anticoagulant therapy without consulting a physician.
